Institute of International Education (IIE) of KHU held the 10th annual Korean language speech contest for foreign nationals on the subject of ‘Family’ and ‘Korean culture experience’ in the Crown Concert Hall on May 17.

22 foreign students from 14 countries competed with one another in Korean among 873 participants from 27 countries including France, America, and Japan in the contest.

Many people participated as judges such as Baek Bong-ja, professor of KHU education graduate school, Kim Eul-dong, entertainer, Lee Sang-seok, vice- president of the Korea Times, Seo Hyeon-jae, secretary-general of Korea-China Friendship Association in Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation, Kim Jung-suk, professor of the Institute of Foreign Language Studies at Korea University, and Jo Hyeon-yong, professor of IIE at KHU.

Natalia (Uzbekistan) from KHU won the Top Excellence Award by Ministry of Culture & Tourism of Korea for the speech about ‘family’ called ‘A girl’s story’. Sonoda Miwa (Japan) from Dong-A University got the Excellence Award by President of KHU for the speech about family called ‘One winter morning’. Total 9 students received a certificate of commendation and prize.

Through this contest, audiences could see world’s various traditional clothes thanks to participants wearing their own nations’ clothes. This contest was more interesting because foreign students studying Korean at IIE demonstrated Taekwon-do to celebrate this contest.

Korean language speech contest for foreign nationals is a festival for foreigners living in Korea in commemoration of King Sejong’s birthday, and IIE of KHU is holding this contest every year.
