Cartoons of university students' daily life, distress, and vision back in 50s and 70s

What was university students¡¯ school life like in the past? We can imagine the life of university students of a few years ago, but it¡¯s not easy to think of the life of the 50s, 60s, or even 70s, which was the time when current students¡¯ fathers were in the universities. Since most universities aren¡¯t interested in documents about students, who are important members of universities, there aren¡¯t many materials about them. Under this circumstance, a special exhibition is going to catch people¡¯s eyes.

The Central Museum of KHU will hold exhibition using the Daehak-Jubo, the school newspaper started in 1955, on the central road that is between University Motto Tower and University Administration Building from June 4th to 8th.

This exhibition composes school lives of university students of from 1955 (the year when the Daehak-Jubo was published first) to 1979 (school¡¯s 30th birthday). Unusual thing is that it uses cartoons and literary gossips appeared in the Daehak-Judo.

Materials being shown is a total of 100, and they are about tuition issue (top image), worries about schoolwork or anxiety about career (middle image), romance problems between men and women (bottom image), and college students¡¯ viewpoints toward society. These describe school¡¯s atmosphere, what students felt and thought, and the phases of the times significantly, so these are valuable materials that we can see general situations of the times at one sight. Some articles from school newspaper and photos from the Central Museum are added in some cartoons and caricatures to make people understand those better.

Kim Jin-young, the head of the Central Museum who planned for special exhibition, said, ¡°This exhibition will be a chance to realize an importance of university history materials as well as our university itself. Especially, it is a good start for research in the field of university life.¡± And he added, ¡°I¡¯m going to set up more prepared exhibition including the period that we couldn¡¯t display. I hope that this special exhibition will be an opportunity to connect between old and young generations and understand each other better.¡±
