Korean study for U.S. prestigious universities¡¯ undergraduate and graduate students


Department of Korean Language from College of Foreign Languages and Literature in KHU and GK (Globalization of Korean Language and Culture) is opening ¡®Summer Korean Intensive Course Program¡¯ with Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations from University of Pennsylvania (UPENN) targeting for American undergraduate and graduate students for 8 weeks from June 18th (Mon) to August 10th (Fri).

This program is one of the NSLI (National Security Language Initiative) which is undergoing in the 7 countries such as Arab, China, and Russia. This was made by president Bush for the United States¡¯ sustainable security and progress in the 21st century, and to make America undergraduate and graduate students participate in more realistic and intensive language learning. For this program, CAORC (Council of American Overseas Research Centers) invited universities around the states, and UPENN was selected finally. UPENN chose only KHU as a partner university.

About 300 students applied for Korean Study program around the states, 18 undergraduate students and 7 graduate students were selected, and they are from Brown University, University of Washington, Yale University, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, and etc.

During this program, participants will get various educations from basic conversation skill, listening, reading, and writing to even high-level free talking through different level education. Moreover, they will have diverse cultural experience by visiting truce village of Panmunjom, museum, Gyeongbok Palace, and southern provinces of Korea such as Jin-ju, Chung-mu, and Yeosu.

Park, Dong-ho, Dean of Korean Language Department said, ¡°It is very meaningful that Korean was selected as one of the 7 National Security Languages and KHU was chosen as a partner university.¡± He added, ¡°Since United States¡¯ talented many students form ties with Korea, it will be a big help for both countries¡¯ development in the future.¡±
