Effective methods of conversation and education with children; a workshop for school staffs


There is no end to parents’ desire to make their children better than others. Korea is sometimes called republic of education because each household spends average 300 million won for children’s education. Nonetheless, it’s hard to find proper education methods with great effect.

Student Life Consulting Team (SLCT) of Office of Career Services in Suwon campus of KHU held a workshop devoted to effective conversation and education methods with their children for school staffs on July 18th and 19th. This workshop, which is prepared for school staffs and their family during summer vacation, was consisted of contents that are helpful to solve difficulties in communication within family or give a guideline for children education.

On the first day, several ways were suggested to communicate with children effectively on the subject of ‘emotion control by non-violent conversation’. And then, there was explanation for interactive communication methods, not one-way communication ones throughout the questions such as ‘how do you want your children grow up?’, ‘what effort are you making for them?’ Consultant of CLCT, Lee Min-su, who gave a lecture, says, “While the amount of infrastructure for education is overflowing, the most important education, which teaches ways to communicate between parents and their children, is lacking.” He added, “This lecture’s point is to improve children’s pride based on the framework of respecting conversation.”

On the second day, the lecture went on to tell individual-specific study pattern depending on characteristic and disposition under the subject of ‘workshop on study guideline for children’. It is the lecture to help to find out optimum study pattern for children. Consultant, Kim Hye-min, who did the lecture, says, “Sending their children to many private learning institutes doesn’t necessarily guarantee many educational chances. When parents look at their children’s inclination carefully through sincere conversation, basic education for good children can be started.” And then, she emphasizes the education based on interest and understanding.

Park Kyung-gye, from Office of Information Services, who participated in the workshop, says, “Before I get involved this, I had some knowledge on effective communication with children through various books. It was good chance to remind what it was from this education program.” He added, “It’s not as easy as it seems to put into practice. Even if that’s true, I will make more effort to respect my children’s personality and praise them more often.”
